Deconstructing My Story: Feminist Anthropologist Nala Draper Uses NFT Art to Challenge Gender Norms and Empower Women

In Colombia, a Latin American country plagued by poverty and deeply rooted in machismo, my life has been shaped by both privilege and the subtle violence of a patriarchal society. While I have not faced the most brutal forms of violence experienced by other women and feminized bodies, such as femicides, sexual assaults, and street harassment, I am still affected.

Four years ago, I would have downplayed my own experiences, believing that other women’s struggles were more relevant. However, I realized that not speaking about my own experiences only perpetuated the deeply ingrained patriarchal system.

As I began to challenge my father’s sexist comments and distance myself from friends who harassed others, I started to recognize the power of using my voice. Artists and authors like Marta Gomez, Renee Ghoust, Rebeca Lane, and their works deeply resonated with me and inspired me to confront my own story.

My illustrations aim to reflect my reality, the people who have impacted me, and those who inspire me daily – family members, friends, social leaders, indigenous women, artists, and writers. By doing so, I hope to deconstruct my history and understand how machismo has shaped and influenced my life and the lives of others.

Through my art, I reclaim my story and embrace the journey of confronting machismo while celebrating the strength and resilience of women and feminized bodies.
